Once again there were record attendances for the nine-day championship which was televised by BBC and the final match lived up to tradition with both players providing a scintillating display of high-scoring darts – which kept the Lakeside audience and TV viewers on the edge of their seats from more than two hours.

During the final Adams boosted his winner’s earnings by also picking up a further £3,000 for the highest check-out of 170.

Bob Potter said: “Yet again the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships has provided us with fantastic entertainment and a magnificent final which has been a great television spectacle. It’s incredible to think that it is 25 years ago that we first hosted this marvellous event. At the time I thought it was going to be a one-off but I was instantly won over by the darts players and the fans. They create such an electric and colourful atmosphere inside Lakeside and make it a really unique sporting occasion.

“The darts has become the highlight of the Lakeside year and we are looking forward to hosting and sponsoring this event for many more years to come.”

England’s Trina Gulliver regained the Ladies’ Championship to notch her eighth Lakeside title after her victory over Welsh player Rhian Edwards.
