Bob and Barbara Potter hail Lakeside darts world champions

Frimley Green: January 11, 2016: Scott Waites was crowned BDO World Champion for the second time by Lakeside proprietor Bob Potter last night as the England darts acre trounced Canadian Jeff Smith 7-1 in the final.

Lakeside boss Mr Potter was joined on stage by his wife Barbara when he handed over the coveted trophy to Waites, a 38-year-old carpenter from Huddersfield, who also won the title in 2013.

On Saturday evening it was Mrs Potter’s turn to do the honours at the trophy presentation to England’s Trina Gulliver who took the BDO Women’s Championship for a record 10th time since her first victory on the Lakeside stage back in 2001.

A capacity audience of nearly 1,400 people, most of them in traditional fancy dress costumes which epitomise the massively popular Lakeside BDO World Championships, joined a TV audience of millions around the UK and world-wide to see the tournament reach its conclusion on Sunday evening.

Bob Potter said afterwards: “Our 2016 championships have been another resounding success with capacity audiences at Lakeside for every session. The competition has provided some great television for both BBC and BT Sport and also our overseas partners, particularly from Holland, where once again the BDO Championship has been really very well received.”

Mr Potter added that Lakeside looks forward to welcoming back the British Darts Organisation for its 40th Championship to be again staged at the famous Frimley Green venue in 2017.
